Summary

From a New York Times best-selling author, psychotherapist, and national advice columnist, a hilarious, thought-provoking, and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist’s world—where her patients are looking for answers (and so is she)。

One day, Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who helps patients in her Los Angeles practice。 The next, a crisis causes her world to come crashing down。 Enter Wendell, the quirky but seasoned therapist in whose office she suddenly lands。 With his balding head, cardigan, and khakis, he seems to have come straight from Therapist Central Casting。 Yet he will turn out to be anything but。

As Gottlieb explores the inner chambers of her patients’ lives — a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can’t stop hooking up with the wrong guys — she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to Wendell。

With startling wisdom and humor, Gottlieb invites us into her world as both clinician and patient, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire, meaning and mortality, guilt and redemption, terror and courage, hope and change。

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is revolutionary in its candor, offering a deeply personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them。

Gottlieb's experience as a therapist was so heartfelt, with explainers for each new psychological term, that I wanted to keep reading until the end。 It was so well written, I felt instantly connected to her patients and even her therapist, Wendell。 If you fancy delving into the realm of modern therapy from a therapist's perspective, then this is pretty great。 Gottlieb's experience as a therapist was so heartfelt, with explainers for each new psychological term, that I wanted to keep reading until the end。 It was so well written, I felt instantly connected to her patients and even her therapist, Wendell。 If you fancy delving into the realm of modern therapy from a therapist's perspective, then this is pretty great。 。。。more

I’ve never read a book like this before! Lori Gottlieb walks you through her experience AS a therapist and her subsequent sessions, while simultaneously walking you through her experience GOING to therapy and her own internal challenges。 Every story is fascinating - the issues brought up by her and her patients。 They are moving and thought provoking。 I’ve never myself been to therapy, but have always felt like anyone could benefit from it。 Reading how much Lori cares for her patients and underst I’ve never read a book like this before! This is a book for anyone who ever wondered what it would be like to talk to a therapist, or be a therapist, or both。 The author opens up her insecurities and her insights for owning up to your issues and becoming more of the you you’d like to be。 I loved it! I enjoyed learning about the process of therapy, and the very touching stories of her patients。 I don’t remember if it was in an intro or disclaimer at the beginning, but I kept thinking about patient confidentiality。 It seems like either the patients stories were combined with others, or they would have signed something giving their OK。

Human and heartwarming。 Not at all what I expected。

I adored this book, have recommended it to friends several times, and my friends have adored it。I'm very skeptical of therapy and have had mixed experiences with it - this book depicts how I imagine it would work if it worked! And hearing these stories and the deep wisdom that the author draws from them makes me believe it sometimes does。The writing is deeply touching and the balance between theory and storytelling very well-done。 I cried a bunch。There's quite a lot of snark toward some characters that I found petty and unfair, and as a result I got a bit judgy of the narrator at first, but she ultimately reveals herself to be empathetic。 I still suspect I wouldn't jibe with the author in real life。 She seems a bit oblivious to how people's lives are shaped by their circumstances and how much her own story has been shaped by luck, and tends to assume her life goals and values are everyone's, and that weakens some of the insights。 (The assumption that her goals & values are universal makes her advice column and her writing on romantic relationships unreadable to me。) But this book nevertheless has more insight per page than almost any other I've read - and most of the insights in this case are general enough to be transferable to my very different life and aims。I read this assuming it was majorly fictionalized - if you're into documentary, reliable-narrator, definitely-happened-just-like-this memoir, don't expect that from this book。 It reads like a 30 minute dramedy with a loose 10-episode overarching arc - much too tidy to suspend your disbelief。 But that's probably why it's so emotionally effective!A little disappointed that the Eva Longoria vehicle based on this book seems to be dead in the water, I would totally watch that。Recommended if you're in a mood to feel big feelings but also want to think big thoughts about feelings at the same time。 。。。more

Such interesting and captivating book。 As someone with a Psychology background, I obviously appreciated the perspectives and scientific concepts/theories。 But, MUCH more than that, I loved how easy it was to read, and how engaging and emotional each story was in its own way - from Lori’s own journey, to her patients’。

“Besides, how can there be an endpoint to love and loss? Do we even want there to be? The price of loving so deeply is feeling so deeply - but it’s also a gift, the gift of being alive。 If we no longer feel, we should be grieving our own deaths。”

Macey Jeffares

Two stars does feel a little bit harsh, but I truly wouldn’t recommend this one。 The book is so long and it definitely starts to drag…I’m not sure what I expected but it was just different stories about her clients?

This was a tough book to read and definitely more tough to review。 This book deals with the taboo subject of therapy and why the issues we face in our daily lives could be linked to something deeper。 How facing those issues makes your life more fulfilling even though it makes you uncomfortable initially。 This is a story about a therapist and her therapist。 After all, it's easier to guide others than ourselves。 I appreciate the author's honestly on it。 Therapy or rather life is about looking insi This was a tough book to read and definitely more tough to review。 This book deals with the taboo subject of therapy and why the issues we face in our daily lives could be linked to something deeper。 How facing those issues makes your life more fulfilling even though it makes you uncomfortable initially。 This is a story about a therapist and her therapist。 After all, it's easier to guide others than ourselves。 I appreciate the author's honestly on it。 Therapy or rather life is about looking inside you, self-inspection, introspection and being honest to ourselves - this is NOT EASY! The thing I admired most about the book is - it tells about a therapists' thought process。 How they look at people who are generally termed as "assholes", how they help them look into them。 I also liked the author's own journey with her issues and denials。 I actually have a lot to say about this book but I won't be able to put it into words as it would go into personal territory。 This book gives people hope, sometimes that things will be better, sometimes that you are doing correct things by keeping your mental well-being over fake relationships and sometimes that help is there and you can still change your life for good! Some of my fav quotes from the book is:Will you see the human in my being? Follow your envy it shows you what you want Suffering shouldn't be ranked, because pain is not a contest Relationships in life don't really end, even if you never see the person again。 Every person you've been close to lives on somewhere inside you。 。。。more

When it was over I felt really sad inside but it’s a beautiful book and it’s like packing 2 years of therapy into a month!

Really late to the game on this one, I know。 Not all days do I want to be a therapist but they says I was reading this book I did want to be a therapist! very honest and soothing to my imposter syndrome lil heart 💘 officially obsessed w Lori gottlieb。

I liked this。 As someone currently seeing a therapist, what I liked most was hearing what it’s like to be on the other side of the room, so to speak。 It’s only one person’s experience but she is a good writer and I think beautifully explained what it is like to walk in her shoes。
